Our Story So Far
Like most origin stories about small family businesses - Dior & Luke Skincare was birthed from a mother’s love and concern for her children.
Let’s paint a picture…we live in a place where it snows 8 months out of the year and seeing a temperature of -40 with the windchill in winter isn’t surprising. Now that you’re freezing having a vivid winter storm in mind. This type of weather started affecting our 3-year-old boy, he developed horribly chapped lips 8 out of 12 months of the year. That year, I tried 5 different lip balm brands. While some of them provided a small measure of relief…we never could get to a point where his lips looked and felt healthy.
As we stood by our son - frustrated with the situation before us - my husband casually mentioned, “maybe we should try something NATURAL”. Great idea…but what? I mean - the lip balms we were using looked like they had natural ingredients on the label…but reading the ingredients told a much different story. Once I peeled back some labels and read the ingredients list to the very end, I saw more than I was thinking. “Why is the ‘natural’ ingredient that is all over the label listed as the 2nd last ingredient on the actual ingredients list?!?” Research, research, research, this is when I took a deep dive into what was needed to make a protective, moisture locking and nourishing lip balm. Remember we are dealing with insane wind and plummeting -40C temperatures. I was surprised to learn how many truly natural products have skin boosting, soothing and protective properties. I also discovered which products were safest for children with the results we wanted. Once we made the switch and started using my new concoction, a noticeable difference was seen within 3 days. A week later, his lips were totally healed!
The family was hooked. Best winter ever. No chapped lips. Just big happy smiles!
But…what about those hands?
Once we got our sons lips figured out. Never a dull moment with kids, our daughter started getting scaly dry hands. Now, dry hands during winter is a pretty common condition, that most people endure in dry environments. However, when my daughter was prescribed a cortisone cream from the doctor because her skin was so damaged - I knew I had to do something. Don’t get me wrong - medicine has its place. But something inside me told me that if I could figure something out to help our sons’ lips - there must be something I could do to help my daughter. I wasn’t in love with the idea of smearing steroids over my little girls’ hands. So back to ‘the lab’ I went. There was way more research that was involved with making a natural lotion. Some new important words like humectant, emollients, butters, oils, and other natural ingredients that are beneficial for our skin. Nature knows how to take care of us and provides what we need, without having to rely on big box eczema lotions laced with other chemicals and an abundance of preservatives to keep them shelf stable.
This is how I created our flagship lotion, SKIN DEEP Hand & Body lotion. We all saw how well it was helping her hands - so we used it on my sons’ hands as well. We then started using SKIN DEEP after bath time for the whole body and quickly realized a dramatic difference. They both were softer and didn’t complain about being itchy anymore!
Today, Dior & Luke Skincare has expanded with an entire line of unique lip balms, lotions, creams, body butters, foaming scrubs, aftershaves, after sun body mist and a body shimmer.
All with a view of quality and genuine care for healthy skin. Our motivations remain the same today as they did that one winter season. Create thoughtfully curated and skin beneficial products that maximize natural ingredients that actually make a difference.
